Chapter sixteen

Chapter 16

“More mundane things on today. I’ll slap some paint on the kitchen walls whilst you enjoy your shift after our nighttime adventures. “It was a struggle for Jack to be perky at that hour as Jane had a quick coffee and went to work. It was Saturday morning and thankfully her last shift until Tuesday morning. She pecked him on the cheek. “The paint colour is on the piece of paper by the kettle.”

Jack showered away the night and went down to the restaurant for breakfast. As much as he enjoyed a cooked breakfast every morning, cooked by someone else; he was looking forward to a bit more normality and toast to start his day. He considered the previous night and ran his hand across his throat, which still felt tight but bore no marks. He wondered who could help him understand what all these visions and experiences meant. Undoubtedly, they were associated with number eleven, yet he always felt relaxed and safe there. It was the periphery which challenged him. He chuckled to himself when he wondered what Casey would make of all this, then he paused and hoped he had recovered. He’d ask Jane to enquire over the weekend.

As he popped the last piece of toast into his mouth, his mind strolled back to the brief conversation he had had with Alicia; ‘we need to talk about other things’. Jack just knew she had seen his accompanying ghost- the young woman. He wondered who the ghost was and where Alicia was; he would love to speak with her about his experiences and what had really happened to her. That still sat uneasily with him.

The day occupied him, and he finished painting the kitchen just as Jane turned up and examined his work. “Missed a bit.” She teased. “Did you get the paint for the lounge?”

He pointed at the large pot on the kitchen unit. They had decided to spruce the place up during their temporary stay. Just a bit of paint. The proper work would be on Chapel Lane.

“Shall we visit tomorrow?” he asked, and Jane nodded. It would be a time with a notepad and a marker pen, and a rare day together.

Jack unlocked the back door and pushed into the kitchen. He wondered if he would feel anything untoward since they had concluded that it was here; in the front bedroom, where Jane had shaken Jack from his strangulated sleep. She smiled at him.

“It feels, well, like home, despite the state of it.” She said, and Jack hugged her. He brandished the marker pen. “Right, my love, where do you want the sockets, and how many? Mark the walls and the sparky will channel out the wall to feed the wiring in. Plasterer will make good when finished. It’s a blank canvas.”

Jane was a woman on a mission. She could envisage exactly what she wanted, and they marked the walls accordingly and Jack took photos on his phone in case there was any doubt. After finalizing the work and colour schemes, they went for lunch and took a walk along the canal.
